Runway's Influence on Style: Runway Fashion to Carry into 2025

As 2024 came to an end, so did certain fashion trends. However, as we delve into the new year, many brands have dropped a blueprint which hints at what could be the go-to vibe for 2025. One of the strongest collections that have been debuted is Yves Saint Laurent’s SS25 collection: highly androgynous, blending the lines between menswear and womenswear. Creative director Anthony Vaccarello has taken a lot of inspiration from the personal style of Yves Saint Laurent himself, incorporating dramatic coats and wide tailored trousers in his designs, creating an effortless air of elegance. Overcoats are a staple in any fashion-oriented person’s wardrobe, but if you don’t have one, now is the time to look. Suits could be the move for 2025, alongside bold layering that allows for both personal expression and the maintenance of a refined edge.

Fashion will always be cyclical in nature, and whilst the YSL SS25 collection exudes an air of class, looking through the archives of past collections will never be a lost cause. If you want your 2025 style to reflect the tailored minimalism of YSL, then Ralph Lauren’s FW 1997 collection is one that is worth taking inspiration from. The collection carries a similar tailored aesthetic, but with more focus on patterns. Stylists are constantly searching through these archives for a reason: there is always inspiration to be found in runway archives, especially if a model has been dressed to showcase a design philosophy.

Celebrities also continue to be one of the biggest gateways into the fashion industry. With Bottega sponsorships, A$AP Rocky continues to prove why he is one of the best-dressed in the industry, capturing the oversized mob-boss coat look that many brands are pushing for in 2025. There's also value in revisiting previous celebrity looks, like a 2023 outfit from Jacob Elordi, which mixed the essence of YSL with a pair of 90s jeans. Mixing aspects of runway designs with your own style is the key to staying stylish and ahead of major trends.

However, with all the emphasis on YSL and tailored minimalism for 2025, denim remains a constant. We saw the rise of flared jeans, with Acne Studios standing out in particular. The Stockholm based fashion house has experienced a surge in popularity, their denim being hailed on TikTok as the gold standard for both baggy and flared jeans. What's more, bootcut jeans have made their way back into menswear after a prolonged hiatus, and with the correct cuts, denim will remain quintessential in 2025. Diesel’s runway collection showcased some interesting looks, featuring well-finished washes and tasteful distressing. Versatility is important in fashion, and while tailored trousers are tempting, opting for different styles from time to time can be both fashionable and interesting. Although I anticipate that baggier jeans will be slightly less popular in 2025, chunkier boots are still in, despite the two often going hand in hand. Denim and boots remain a classic; with the correct proportions, you can never go wrong. Levi’s 517 or Acne Studios 2023M jeans offer the perfect flare to pair with a good pair of black boots.

Bella Hadid’s recent personal style further pushes the agenda for a more YSL-esque dress sense in 2025. Earlier this year, she was seen in clothing reflective of a cowboy aesthetic, but with the fall, she transitioned to large coats and a classy elegance. However, she has also been seen in a vintage Cavalli denim outfit, highlighting why personal style is about versatility, mixing and matching elements that you like.

You can never have too many boots. Trainers come and go but boots are timeless. Denim and boots will always look good, so when you’re running out of time and can’t think of an outfit, throw on this combo, paired with a slightly oversized overcoat and a well-fitting white tee.

Personal fashion can never be entirely predicted, but if you want to focus on shaping your own style this year then runway collections remain the blueprint. That being said, it is important that you should dress in a way that makes you feel confident, reflecting your own personal style. However, if you are stuck rethinking your style for the year, then tailored minimalism could be the way to go. Vintage wool overcoats (buy a size up!) and wide trousers that are tailored to drape over your boots are a base outfit that you can accessorise to your own liking. Think chunky silver jewellery, leather gloves, and structured bags that double as works of art. Focus on textures—fuzzy knits, quilted fabrics, and soft leather combine comfort with luxury. Pair them with sleek tailoring for a refined yet effortless look this year. As Yves Saint Laurent said, 'fashion fades, style is eternal', offering a reminder that individual style remains key. Maintain your originality and incorporate aspects of fashion that you are drawn to, but most importantly, clothing that you feel confident in!
